Sæby became a market town in 1524 and the first part of the exhibitions at Sæby Museum presents elements from the development of the market town; from being the most important seaport in the Børglum bishops’ diocese and in Vendsyssel in the Middle Ages with its own church and monastery.
Sæby was an important commercial centre and the museum’s collection of silversmith work illustrates the earlier financial importance. During the Renaissance, however, the development stagnated; the town slowed down and had to wait until the 19th century to experience prosperity and growth again.
